Awesome Homebrew Computer
Date: Mon, August 21, 2006
Ok, so a software engineer wants to learn more about hardware, so what does he do? Designs and implements his own computer. He's got it to the point where you can telnet in and play around a bit. Very very nice work.
Did I mention it is mostly done with 74xxx series chips?
Did I also mention the website is simply awesome? Lots of detail, and very well written. And awesome videos!
And you simply must check out his other projects as well; especially the description of his homemade kitchen timer, and the requisite video of it's operation.

Dave:
My first real memory of a computer was when my brother brought home a Tandy Color Computer. He bought a couple games with it(I remember Raaka-Tu, and a game about being an oil tycoon). I got him to program a little game that night for me, we worked on it till 2am. I was probably 7 or 8 at the time.
Totally changed my life.

I like his commentary on the first time he ran a computer program. For those of us who started in computing in those days (unlike Cecilia who wasn't even born in those days), it brings back some very fond memories. I'll have to write up my "first computing experience" story sometime.
