I actually did it. Today I placed my first order for real, honest-to-god, actual bits of airplane parts to start my Pietenpol project. About $170 worth of cap strip stock for building wing ribs, some glue (T-88 epoxy), and aircraft plywood for gussets.
I am so completely excited, I took Cecilia out for coffee in celebration. I have always wanted to build my own airplane ever since I fell in love with the Vari-Eze when I was 10. I am taking the first step towards not being a complete poser. :) "Entering the Arena" as Teddy Roosevelt would say.

Cecilia:
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Nick M:
It's about time! Congrats. Now in 5 years or so your flying coffin will be done. I will be sure to get you a scarf so you can acuratly portray the picture on your old white bord acuratly.
Dave:
Hmpf. See if you get a ride. I'll take the scarf though...
Nick M:
I feel safer already!
Jim:
So, first the plane then the license? :)
Up in the air, Junior Birdman! Keep us posted on the progress of your flying machine.
Dave:
The license is really just a formality.. A $2-5000 formality, but a formality nonetheless. :)
