Build Your Own Isolated Mountain Life.

Not too long ago, Dave got a book from his mom that was a compilation of popular mechanics/woodworking type articles from the late thirties. Among them was an interesting article on making an American Flat Bow. Of course, what could be better then learning how to make your own deadly weapon? That got me interested, so of course I turned to the trusty internet.
Here is a good beginners article on how to make a bow. The parent site, Primitive Ways also has a plethera of fun articles on how to make fire, stone tools, arrows, musical instruments, and even using herbs and plants for medicinal value. Also, check out the fun article on building an igloo.
What is really nice about these articles is you don't get a weird montana militia feeling about the guys doing these things. They are guys who do it for the historical interest, and are proud of their ability to create useful things out of a minimum of materials.

Steve also wrote a great book called Practicing Primitive: A Handbook of Aboriginal Skills which you can find at Powell's by clicking here.
