Here's a neat little page on how to cast your own engine parts. You could probably produce 80% of an engine with these instructions -- some of the higher stress parts would probably require some other processes, but hey, if you got so far as to cast your own parts, what's a little case hardening and shot peening among friends?

Oh, and you'd need to do some work with a lathe as well, but there you go!
