I think Byte magazine started to go downhill when they started dropping their hobbyist content. It was originally the magazine for the computer enthusiast, and then slowly became another boring business magazine. One of the coolest regular columns they had was Steve Ciarcia's Circuit Cellar, which always was documenting some cool electronic project or other. When Byte dropped the column, the author continued on, and you can still read the Circuit Cellar today.
