Several years ago, I made a set of electronic drums. It's really quite easy really -- the sensor is a piezo buzzer (you can buy them from Radio Shack for a couple bucks), the pad itself is plywood and mouse pads, and you can make a stand out of PVC pipe.

This web page details a bit more sophisticated version from what I did, but it requires a bit more capital outlay.
