Want to build your own record turntable, but want to know some of the design considerations? Here's a couple sites...

Giant Slabs of Teutonic Aluminium
Just don't look at the wood pieces with a lascivious mind...

As usual with anything Hi-Fi, endless tail chasing can ensue.

Jim: Sure beats the turntable Devin and I made a few years back. He'd never seen a record player and I had no turntable so we built one from Legos. Using the little motor that came with his set and the gearing, we actually got it to play at about the right speed. The sound was reproduced with a sewing needle and a hand rolled paper cone.

OK, low tech and low-fi but it demonstrated the principle to my son. And it was hella fun!

Dave: And I have to ask -- what did you play on that turntable? :)
Jim: A VERY old Bill Cosby record. It actually sounded pretty good.

The biggest problem is that the motor, which is part of the simple robotics set for building R2D2 so it only played for about 15 seconds at a time.
