Gorgeous Minimalist Telescopes
Date: Thu, December 28, 2006
Greg Babcock makes these incredible minimalist telescopes. He's taken the Dobsonian telescope, and reduced it to it's logical conclusion. Amazing stuff. He's basically done away with the mirror box, 99% of the secondary cage... And what's left is just a spidery wisp of a thing.
The 18" scope is pretty cool, and then there's the 24"...
Did I mention these scopes are so low to the ground, you probably have to lay on your stomach to look at something on the horizon? I'm not sure if that's a design problem or not. :)

Cecilia: That is a beautiful telescope! It really doesn't take much room in the back of his car.
Jim: Very nice scopes! With a cloth cover for the trusses, you'd have a top notch scope.
As for items on the horizon, the air turbulence close to the horizon makes for pretty lousy seeing so I'm not sure it's an issue.
Dave: That close to the horizon thing was more of a thought experiment than anything else. :)
