Doug Malewicki, modern renaissance man, Designed a small 3 wheeled car in the late 70's/early 80's to win the record for most miles per gallon recorded over public roads.
You can buy the plans for his car, of which I own a copy. Pretty nice plans too. It has a steel frame underneath the fiberglass exterior, so you are not limited to the rather dated exterior design from the plans.

I do give the guy a big thumbs up for having a women sitting on the car in almost all the pictures. Some reason that always seems to sell.
