Jim Craig's Antenna
Date:   Mon, May 15, 2006
Resident commenter at large Jim Craig has written a little build diary on how to design and build your own J-Pole ham radio antenna. He's been badgering me to get into ham radio, and I just badger back about how he should build his own airplane.

This is also a good time to mention that you too can use the logging website I put together. I've been thinking of changing the name to Plogger, or something equally shameless. Project Log -- Plog...Plogger! Oh how very web 2.0 of me...

Dave: That's pretty much what the website is about -- the joy of building something yourself that most people would simply go out and buy at a store.
Jim: A "little" build diary?

There's 20 entries in there, mate! The next biggest log has 5 entries.

As for my building a plane, I think I'm going to stick to ham radio. To the best of my knowledge, no ham operator has ever been carried away on a stretcher (with or without a sheet over his face) when the power to his radio conked out.

All kidding aside, thanks to Dave for giving folks a place to put our build diaries.

Dave: I choose quality over quantity... ;)

I would say flying an airplane you built yourself is probably about as dangerous as motorcycle riding, maybe a bit safer. I know plenty of guys who've been doing it for years.
Jim: Maybe I should build a plane, then. I've already almost killed myself on a motorcycle.
Cecilia: Excellent BuildDiary Jim! Also, awesome t-shirt!
Michael: If you don't want to build a J-Pole, you can purchase them ready to go at this site: http://www.kb9vbr.com/jpole.htm
Jim: That might be a good idea for some folks who lack time and space to build their own but I provided the build log for people like me who enjoy the satisfaction of putting something together like this and making it work.

I think that's why Dave put this site up because there's lots of stuff here that someone could buy elsewhere (telescopes, speakers and so on) but for do-it-yourself types like me, it's nice to have one place to find the resources to help us out.

Jim: One more note which I'll post soon on my build log. I borrowed an antenna analyzer from a friend to see the SWR (standing wave ratio for you non-ham types). A perfect antenna is a 1:1 ratio. My J-Poles were 1.1:1 and 1.2:1 respectively which isn't too shabby from what I've been told. Naturally, I'm keeping the better one and letting Tim have the second. ;)

We have a repeater on Mt. Mitchell which is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. So with my little 25 watt 2 meter rig, I've spoken to people in Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia and, naturally, North Carolina. I've been told that if the conditions are right, I can talk to folks in Alabama and other eastern states.

73!
