John Dobson
Date: Mon, February 21, 2005
John Dobson is the unquestioned father of modern amateur telescope making. His telescope mounting design is incredibly popular, and he has certainly influenced many many people to make their own telescopes.
This webpage has a list of interesting articles written by and about John Dobson, I particularly like the one on clouds.

It was pretty amazing and every time someone had an objection to one of his ideas, Dobson was quick with an answer. Most of us figured there was something wrong with his theory but nobody could quite put a finger on it.
After a while, because he was so quick to counter our objections, the room grew quiet. Finally, Dobson said, "Surely someone has more questions!"
A timid voice from the back replied, "We're all afraid, John!" ;)
