Line Array Speaker Project
Date: Sun, January 23, 2005
Line array speakers are nifty. You take a whole bunch of speaker drivers, and you put them in a vertical line, and then wire them in series/parallel with each other so they look like one speaker (at, say, 8 ohms) to the amplifier. Since the load is shared between so many drivers they have a great dynamic range because each driver is doing less work and operating more efficiently.
The downside is that with so many drivers working at once each is a point source; the sound waves eminating from each speaker can cancel each other out, especially at higher frequencies. Naturally there's a long list of design tradeoffs you can use to mitigate this; speaker design is a complicated art.

Nick:
Found your new speakers I see. ;) Rather bulky, but they look cool.
coa:
may i see your custom box line array.......very detail....thanks...
i'm coa from indonesia
Dave:
I have not built them yet, I have a couple drawings that I have made, and a box full of 32 drivers. Someday when I have a little time I might put them together.
Dave:
Well, not those. I'm making a pair of UBT's right now. When I place the order for the drivers, I'm going to get a box of 32 4" drivers (There's a closeout were you can get them for 49 cents each).
Expect a mini build diary for the new speakers, although it probably won't be as cool as the first one I did, unless I have to go to the hospital or something.... ;)

Nick:
Oh! Oh! I see the curio cabnete in your future!!!
Dave:
Hmpf, I have all the most dangerous work behind me at this point, did all the table saw cuts over the weekend. Now I just have to prevent my clumsy ass from cleaving itself in two with a router or a jigsaw.
On second thought, there's still a good chance for me to end up in the curio cabinet at the hospital.
