The tenets of BEAM robotics are founded on the idea that Artificial Intelligence will be built, not by modeling robots on complex human behaviors, but on the more fundamental behaviors of creatures such as insects.
Chiu-Yuan Fang's BEAM photovore Page is a great beginners guide for creating your first photovore BEAM robot. You can create surprisingly natural behaviors from simple electronic circuits. For example, the photovore is attracted to it's food source (light). It also avoids obstacles. Other, more complex behaviors can be created, but the photovore is a great place to start, with very interesting results.
If you get more interested in BEAM robotics, I suggest looking at Solarbotics.net. Soloarbotics is a huge reference, with a great 'Bestiary' on the different types of BEAM robots, assorted circuits that can be used in BEAM robotics, datasheets and also videos.
