My Favorite Bolger Boat Design
Date:   Tue, January 3, 2006
When I first started looking at sailboat designs, I fell in love with the Bolger Light Schooner; and who wouldn't? Fast, cool, funky, romantically overblown, fun. Plus, it has the coolest websites devoted to it.

But if you go to the Instant Boats website, there's another design -- the singlehanded schooner, which is sort of a slightly smaller version designed to be singlehanded. I fell in love with this design, and found out that it was in Boats with an Open Mind, so naturally I bought the book, and the plans. It's a really cool boat, it's designed to be able to sail on the ocean, say to Catalina and back. It has a weighted daggerboard (around 100lbs), and is supposed to be not as tippy as the light schooner, which is notoriously easy to knock down.

The original name for the design was the His and Hers Schooner, because the man who commisioned the design wanted to build two -- one for him, and one for his wife so they could go sailing together, but in separate boats.

There's not too much information available on the internet for this design, the Bolger Yahoo Group has a little, but you have to search pretty far back. And there's a small article on Duckworks about the first one made, which has some very nice pictures.
