Cecilia and I went to Portland State University for a year, and went to a few meetings of the rocketry club, or as they like to call themselves, the Portland State Aerospace Society.
I mostly threw out wild "why don't we use a gyroscope to change the rockets attitude like in Heinlein!", and various other highly dubious suggestions. They mostly (and rightly) ignored me.
Regardless, they do a lot of interesting work in guidance, and have a very cool website that you should take a look at.
