Review: Build the Instant Catboat
Date:   Sun, February 27, 2005
Build the Instant Catboat, Harold "Dynamite" Payson, 42 pages. ISBN 1-887222-04-9

I own several of Payson's books, and they are all excellent. Many of his books come with several designs you can build yourself, this one goes into detail on just one -- the Bobcat. The boat is gorgeous, especially for a simple plywood boat. It is a bit more complex than the boats in Instant Boats, and Build the New Instant Boats, but I think it is worth it.

Since Payson is only describing one boat, he has the chance to go into very good detail on building all the little bits of this boat. There's some nice detail on how build the rudder, and especially the mast. In his other books, these details are given little space and few pictures.

The panels of the boat are tied together in a process usually called Stitch and Glue, but Payson is a proponent of what he calls "Tack and Tape". Both methods are basically the same thing, except Payson uses bent over nails were most people use wire. Some brilliant savant figured out that zip-ties work really well, and this seems like a marvelous idea to me, although it probably costs a couple more dollars to do.

Regardless, this is another marvelous book by Dynamite Payson. Highly Recommended. Plus, if you buy the book through the above link, I get a kickback, which would be much appreciated.
