Schreder Sailplanes.
Date:   Sat, August 19, 2006
Back in January I was working on a series of articles on homebuilt sailplanes. I said there was a lack of good designs that were currently proven and available. You can expand on the list, a bit, by going to the vintage sailplane association, they reportedly have plans for some interesting older sailplanes. Basically though, you have the Marske designs, the Fauvel, and a few others that don't have support anymore (Windrose/Woodstock/Carbon Dragon, etc etc...), and will prove to be of varying levels of challenge in finding a copy of the plans, etc.

I never finished the series, because I never talked about the single most successful homebuilt sailplane designs in the US -- Dick Schreder's designs. He produced a long series of very interesting sailplane designs, many of them V-tailed, and most of them of very high performance. I would post several links to various websites, but really you only need one -- Soar Idaho has tons of good information on these designs.

And yes, to make up for an unintended slight I made in one of my old articles, you can still get support and parts for many of Schreder's designs, along with a new design (can't tell if it's flown yet, doesn't look like it) that they are working on. Information can be found at hpaircraft.com.
