Go take a look at the Robot Room. Lots of cool robotics projects, including beam robots (very simple robots patterned after insects and (usually) entirely built out of electronics components), robot sumo competitors, line followers, and lots of other cool stuff.

His obstacle avoidance is very nicely done -- something not as easy as it looks.
