I should have titled this section "The Dornier" because that is what this is really about. And what a plane! easily the 2nd coolest airplane at the show.



Not only is it German, not only is it pre-war (why was it never scrapped to make 10 Me-109's?), not only is it a trimotor, a seaplane, a parasol wing... It's one giant flying anachronism that belongs in a museum, and yet.. It's not! Oh, and of course the turboprop engines, which somehow totally fit the whole... gestalt of the thing even though they are brand new! It's just sooooo cool.

Here you can see some action pictures from Tuesday, which was very cloudy.


Did I mention they also added on landing gear when they installed the new wing? This plane was originally a true flying boat, not an amphibian.

Parked next to the Dornier was a replica of a Sikorsky S-38 that is absolutely stunning as well. The replica was built to recreate a research flight made by the SC Johnson company to South America to find a reliable source of Carnauba Palms. Take a look at the larger version of the pictures, it's very very photogenic.
