Cutting it out.
December 7, 2006

I own a table saw, but I don't really have a place to set it up -- I really need to get a shop together -- so I had to go over to a friend's place to cut the panels out.

We didn't take any pictures, but you can find plenty of information on how to cut square panels with a table saw, it's not terribly interesting. Heck, look at my speakers page for pictures of 2 guys trying to kill themselves with a table saw.

The carcass went together pretty fast, most of the work you do on a project like this is finish work. 95% done, 95% to go as the airplane builders say...

Yes that's my living room, and yes my wife is ok with it. Really!

The Top
December 7, 2006

I made the top out of 2 pieces of 3/4" MDF. Since I left the bezel on the monitor, I cut one piece of the MDF to fit the bezel, and the other to fit the (obviously smaller) monitor opening. This way you can set the monitor up higher in the cabinet.

MDF soaks up paint like a sponge, you will want to use a couple coats of really thick primer before you put on the actual color coat(s). Black requires a lot of paint to cover completely, it'll probably require several coats. Either that, or I was applying the paint wrong...
