I use Inkscape, an Open Source vector draw application for my card model design work, so it seemed only logical to use it to design my cabinet as well. It's a very well put together program, and a joy to use.

My band is called Space Mutiny, so it seemed logical to name the cabinet that as well. Since Space Mutiny was originally a crappy 80's scifi movie (it was used on MST3k, a must see...), I thought it would be cool to imagine that perhaps a marginal 80's arcade game company came up with a video game tie in, so that was the idea I had. Looks pretty cool, although I should move the text so that it doesn't overlap the robot, that doesn't look quite right...

I wanted to design something with a modern look to it -- something that would fit in with modern furniture (we own some Ikea stuff, so it seemed logical). I wanted a nice subtle curve to the sides, a vertically oriented monitor (most of our favorite games are vertical), and something that could be used as a piece of furniture, and not just some hulking upright cabinet with an oversized control panel like so many other Mame cabinets that get built.
