I built 2 rib jigs. The first one was ok, but it just didn't quite come together, so I started again. The second jig is the charm I guess.

Making the jig
September 8, 2007

I started on this second jig because the first had a real problem with letting ribs go once they were glued.. ;)

First you lay out all the coordinates from the plans. There are a couple discrepancies involved in the plans. The wing is laid out as a pair of coordinates at each station, the outside of the lower part of the curve, and then the measurement for the upper part of the curve. The trick is to realize that the upper measurement isn't from the base line that you draw, but offset from the lower measurement. This makes your life annoying because you have to add together all sorts of awkward english measurements to get the proper value (5 5/32" + 2 1/16"....)

Gluing down jig blocks

It's better to err on the side of too many jig blocks, don't you think? I have no truck with this 7-8 blocks being plenty, oh no! one every inch were it matters, then trail off to every 3 inches or so farther on.

Yes I am building an airplane inside the house, want to make something of it? ;)
